I came to the island of Koh Lanta this morning, and have decided to stay here for two nights.
The weather has been pretty much cloudy and rainy since I got off the train yesterday. Aside from a few hours of sunshine when I was on the ferry earlier today, it's been wet and cloudy all day. It's actually sort of the rainy season in this region, but I thought it was comparable to Bangkok's weather and that I could manage it. One thing I didn't realize though is that Bangkok's thunderstorms come and go like nothing, whereas the term "rainy day" seems more apropos for what has been happening since I got here. I don't mind the weather though because that's why it's off-season, and things are cheaper and more deserted because of it. I rented a scooter today and spent hours just exploring the island. This was my first time ever driving one myself, and it made me think of how nice it would be to have one in Bangkok. The rain was pretty heavy at times, but I still covered a lot of ground today. I'm not sure if ts because it's a Sunday or from the weather or whatever, but I was grateful that the island seemed pretty quiet with not too many cars on the road. At one point the rain was coming down really hard though, so I had to pull off to the side and wait under the cover of a tree for about half an hour. It felt so liberating to be able to just drive all over Koh Lanta. I think the last time I ever drove a car was for a work trip to Aspen in 2008, so I can't express how nice it felt to just go as fast and crazy as I wanted to---even on a scooter.
