I'm currently in a southern province of Thailand named Trang. After 17 hours on the night train, I finally arrived here a few hours ago. Most of the students I tutor in Bangkok are away right now because of summer vacation, so I decided to go on a really cheap excursion somewhere. I chose this region of the country because I've never been here before, and needed a change from Bangkok for a little bit. I'm hoping to check out some of the nearby islands of Trang, but for today I'm taking it easy in a guesthouse near the Trang train station. This is the first time I'm ever taking a trip that's not because of a visa-run, so I'm excited to be able to check out new places in Thailand. Of course I'm traveling alone, and so the 17 hour train ride made me really antsy by the time we finally arrived two hours late. I have no itinerary at all and am just taking things one day at a time down here. It's been raining pretty heavily since I arrived before, so I just came back from a store run to pick up some things. And after not purchasing or owning a pair for many years, I bought a pair of flip-flops today. Now, my own personal theory is that flip-flops are not practical and should rarely or never be worn, especially if you live in a busy city. I've thought this way since I was back home in NYC, and think that grown men can not be taken seriously if flip-flops are their daily footwear of choice (it's even worse when grown men drag their damn flip-flops like their comfortably walking in their house but that's a whole other story). In Thailand, many of its resident wear flip-flops on a daily basis, and I can sort of understand why and all of that more. I mean the fact that it's hot as fuck all year round or that a monstrous thunderstorm can appear in an instant are just a few them. However, I've still managed to go all this time without them. But that had to change today. It's funny though because I do feel like I actually bought them for one of the few legit reasons anyone could say haha---the only sneakers I have are soaked and I will hopefully be spending time near some sand soon. And now it really does feel like a vacation since I actually own a pair again. If all goes to plan, they'll come in handy for the next week. Another funny thing is that I had decided to go without the Internet at my home for some time now, so being able to go online in my guesthouse feels like something I haven't done in a while. ...it's the little things that count.
